One of seven children, Joe was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he graduated from Broughton High School. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1982, and his law degree in 1985), Joe was admitted to practice before the United States Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina and the North Carolina state courts, where he has been practicing ever since.

On a personal note, Joe and Sharron met at the University of North Carolina law school. They were married after Sharron graduated. They have three sons, and Joe enjoys coaching baseball and basketball. Joe is a deacon at Oakmont Baptist Church, plays church league basketball, and also participates as an R.A. leader and one of the praise team singers for the Oakmont worship service. In addition, Joe is the drummer for Harmless Error, a lawyer rock & roll band.
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina, Sharron R. Edwards went on to receive her law degree from that same institution in 1987. A member of the Holderness Moot Court and the Order of the Coif (an honorary scholastic society recognizing law students who attain a high grade of scholarship), Sharron R. Edwards has a long history of academic excellence and professional accomplishments. As a past president of the Pitt County Bar Association, Sharron has distinguished herself not only in the classroom but also in the courtroom. She is currently a member of several professional legal organizations, including the North Carolina and American Bar Associations, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers.
When not practicing law, Sharron stays busy caring for the couple's three boys. She also teaches an adult couples Sunday School class at Oakmont Baptist Church and a seventh and eighth grade girls Bible study. Sharron is active in FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) at C.M. Eppes Middle School and volunteers at South Greenville Elementary School. For the last several years, Edwards & Edwards has provided incentive prizes for the "Character Counts at South Greenville" program led by the school's guidance counselor.
